In the Prehistoric Workshop, you now have the unique opportunity to witness how experts prepare real dinosaur bones and fossils. Here, preparators work on millions of years old fossils and dinosaur bones right before the eyes of dino fans.
As one of the first highlights, you can witness the work on a Diplodocus skeleton. Preparators work on the huge bones of the up to 27-meter-long herbivore with hammers, chisels, brushes, and spatulas, freeing them from the surrounding rock or the plaster encasements, known as “jackets,” used for transport.
“We are certain that close contact with the fascinating work of the preparators will further strengthen the interest in the prehistoric world for many young dinosaur fans,” says museum founder Michael Völker, “What previously happened behind the scenes at the Altmühltal Dinosaur Museum will now become a guest attraction.” This includes the mechanical exposure during the preparation process, the chemical treatment of the bones, and the assembly of the “bone puzzle pieces.”
