Ammonite
Masterpieces

NEW

Beauty and science – fantasy and research. Hardly any other group of fossils combines these aspects as closely as the ammonites. A shell that is constructed according to the primal law of the golden ratio – an age that exceeds even the wildest imagination – a variety of forms that hardly anyone had the slightest idea of until now.

In our special exhibition Ammonite Masterpieces, the fascination and beauty of ammonites is brought to light in an impressive way. Almost 150 specimens of a quality that cannot be found in any museum or collection anywhere in the world.

Even 40,000 years ago, ammonites with their magical spiral shape were used for cult purposes. For hundreds of years, countless scientists have been researching their diversity. Almost every child has found at least one fragment of these fossils, which are actually very common. But only recently has it become possible to free their fossilised shells from the rock intact using modern technology and show off their breathtaking beauty.

For almost 350 million years, ammonites, a form of extinct squid, dominated the world’s oceans – much longer than the dinosaurs lived on land. It is quite possible that they were even much more intelligent than many of the dinosaurs.

The exhibition book

The exhibition is accompanied by the book “Ammonite Masterpieces” by Raimund Albersdörfer and Kristin Erdmann. On more than 400 large-format pages, the authors document the fascination and beauty of ammonites in a knowledgeable, entertaining and colourful way.
